Acupressure Points for Asthma


Acupressure is an effective natural method to alleviate discomfort from asthma by applying pressure to specific acupressure points on the body. The following are the commonly used acupressure points to relieve asthma that you can do on your own. Instead of using your fingers, you can also use a tool called an acupressure pen, which is a pen-like tool with a small rounded end. Once you master this simple self-care technique, you can use it anytime and anywhere.

Tiantu (CV22)

Tiantu, also known as Heaven Projection, can ease cough, clear throat and reduce the discomfort caused by asthma. It is located in the suprasternal fossa, just above the jugular notch. Press it gently with your thumb or forefinger and applying pressure using small circular motions.

Yuji (LU10)

Yuji, also known as Fish Border, can be effective in relieving asthma. It is located on the radial side of the midpoint of the first metacarpal bone, on the junction of the red and white skin. Use your thumb and apply pressure or you can do circular motion with thumb. This procedure should have been repeated for the other hand.

Tanzhong (CV17)

Tanzhong, also known as Middle of the Chest, can be used to relieve chest pain and dyspnea. It is located on the sternum at the level of the 4th intercostal space, the space between two ribs. Press it gently with your thumb or forefinger and applying pressure using small circular motions.

Neiguan (PC6)

Neiguan, also known as Inner Gate, can be used to relieve fullness and pain in the chest. It is located in the middle of the wrist, about two finger widths below the palm. Use your thumb or forefinger to press on it for 2 to 3 minutes. This procedure should have been repeated for the other wrist.

Shenmen (HT7)

Shenmen, also known as Spirit Gate, can calm your mind and help you relax. It is located at the ulnar end of the distal wrist crease when the palm faces upward, on the radial side of flexor carpi ulnaris tendon. Use your thumb and apply pressure or you can do circular motion with thumb. This procedure should have been repeated for the other wrist.

Dingchuan (EXTRA 17/M-BW-1)

Dingchuan literally means calm breath, it can relieve asthma attacks. It is located just below the 7th cervical vertebra. Use your thumb and apply pressure or you can do circular motion.

Lieque (LU7)

Lieque, also known as Interrupted Sequence, can be used to reduce the discomfort caused by asthma. It is located on the radial margin of the forearm, superior to the styloid process of the radius, above the transverse crease of the wrist. Press it gently for about 1 minute or you can do circular motion with finger.
